The New English Bible says it this way: "If you are angry, do not let anger lead you into sin; do not let sunset find you still nursing it; leave no loop-hole for the devil." Do you realize God is saying it is OK to get mad? There are three things in these verses you need to know: Anger is a God-given emotion Anger is not necessarily sinful Anger must have safeguards There are two safeguards found right in this passage: 1. "Do not let the sunset find you still nursing it." Do not prolong anger into the night. Make sure you solve your anger problem by the end of the day. 2. "Leave no loop-hole for the devil." That means, don't express your anger in such a way that the devil gets his foot in the door of your life. Sometimes it's OK to get angry if you express it the right way and resolve the problem before you go to bed. There are also bad reasons to get angry. Because you did not get your own way Because you are jealous of someone Because you have not forgiven someone Because you reacted without investigating all the facts. If you're angry most of the time, the reason is probably more serious than the ones listed above. You need a Christian counselor who can help you find the root of your problem. Anger can be the result of abuse or neglect, rejection, guilt, or unhealthy self-esteem. Although few admit it, many teens are angry at God. Maybe their parents have split up. Or someone close to them died. They blame God for their suffering. For whatever the reason, anger that is not dealt with in the right way can destroy you. You can be free of constant anger. Find the real reason for the anger, face it honestly, then work through the problem. Go directly to the person who is causing your frustration, and respectfully tell him or her what is making you angry. It will take some time and you may need some help, but it can happen. The evidence of the Holy Spirit in your life is love, joy, peace, and self-control. Unchecked anger will rob you of those things. Don't let that happen. Don't waste your life being angry. You can choose to let go of your anger and let God begin to heal you. Anger is like a pair of dark sunglasses. It changes the way everything looks and keeps you from seeing things the way they really are. Once you remove these sunglasses of anger, you'll begin to see life and people in a completely different way. Anger will harden your heart toward God and other people. It keeps you from seeing their pain and it keeps you from hearing God. Anger is not worth the price you pay to hold on to it. Ask God to lead you now to someone that can help you. EPHESIANS 4:26-27 "In your anger do not sin": Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold. |
