Question 20.
I feel suicidal. What should I do?

These are hard, stressful times we live in, aren't they? Families are breaking up, money is tight, there is so much violence and war. Drugs and alcohol are everywhere and parents seem to have little time to show they care.

Sometimes thoughts of suicide come from feelings of hopelessness that come from stress. The idea of "running away" from our pain sounds good. Maybe you are angry at your parents; you just want to get back at them and hurt them the way they have hurt you. Or maybe you are feeling angry at yourself and feel a desperate need to punish yourself because of real or imagined guilt. It could be that someone very close to you died and you have an urge to join them. Whatever the reason, there is a battle going on inside you and you need help to win the war.

You can win -- there is hope! Jesus Christ offers not just eternal life in heaven, but abundant life now! You can have peace, love, joy, hope -- everything you need. Jesus really loves you and understands your pain. He has the answers you need for all your problems.

Suicide is not a solution. What you want is relief from a bad situation and the pain you are experiencing. The relief will come with the help of a Godly, Christian counselor. Please, immediately tell someone you trust -- your pastor, youth leader, or a caring adult. Let them help you to find the answers God has for you. His way is always best.

In Isaiah 6:13 God promises "to provide for those who grieve . . . beauty instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair."

God will do this for you if you will let Him and do things His way. You must not take matters into your own hands and play God. You must make a choice with your will to reject the suicidal thoughts you are having and look to Jesus for help. We all want to know someone loves and cares for us. Jesus is that someone. He died for you, so you don't have to die.

ISAIAH 61:3 And provide for those who grieve in Zion -- to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord for the display of his splendor.
