Question 21.
I know it is wrong to use bad or crude language, but I cannot seem to stop. What should I do?

Matthew 12:34-36 says that what comes out of our mouth reveals what is in our hearts. There are two reasons why you may be unable to overcome this problem:

• You’ve never really accepted Christ. When Jesus comes to live in us, we become "new creatures in Christ. Old things pass away and all things become new" (2 Corinthians 5:17). Now that does not mean you will never sin again, but it does mean that the Holy spirit puts new desires in you. He also empowers you to live out those desires. Sometimes the reason people cannot live the Christian life is because they are not really Christians. They have no power.

• Maybe you have accepted Christ but there are things in your life that are keeping you powerless. What are you feeding your brain? Do you have a steady diet of movies, books, music, and friends who use filthy language? Garbage in -- Garbage out. Eliminate those things from your life. Begin now to transform your life--and your mouth--by renewing your mind with God’s Word (Romans 12:2). God says in Philippians 4:8 to fix our minds on things that are "true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, and praiseworthy."

Like anything else, bad language can become a habit. You are the only Bible some people will ever "read"! Ask God to help you change the way you talk. Begin to take in God’s Word and be careful about who and what you expose yourself to.

2 CORINTHIANS 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!

MATTHEW 12:34-36 You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks. The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him. But I tell you that men will have to give account on the day of judgement for every careless word they have spoken."

ROMANS 12:2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is- -his good, pleasing perfect will.

PHILIPPIANS 4:8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--If anything is excellent or praiseworthy--think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me--put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.
