Question 24.
How do I get rid of my guilt?

It depends-are you guilty of something? It could be that you feel guilty because you are. If you’ve never made a commitment to Christ, if you’ve never had your sins forgiven, then there’s only one way to get ride of your guilt. Trust Jesus as your Lord and Savior.

If you are a Christian, then the guilt you are experiencing falls into one of two categories:

• Real Guilt-This kind of guilt comes after you’ve done something wrong, and have not admitted it to God. It is hurting your relationship with him. If you are guilty, take responsibility for the wrong you have done, and admit it to God. First John 1:9 says that if you confess your sin to God (agree with him that it is wrong), he will be faithful to forgive you and purify you from all unrighteousness. No more guilt.

• False Guilt-This is probably the thing that trips up some Christians more than anything else. They’re not guilty of anything, but they always feel guilty. Where does that come from? In the book of Job in the Old Testament, Satan is called "the accuser of the brethren." The devil tries to make you feel guilty because he knows it will hurt your effectiveness for God. When you’re feeling guilty, you’re less likely to pray, read the Bible, or serve others. (See Question #26).

How do you know if your guilt is real or false? It is the Holy Spirit’s job to convince and convict you of sin. When he does, he is very specific. "You were mean to your sister." That is real. When Satan accuses us, it is very general. "You sinned." Nothing else. That is false guilt.

1 JOHN 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
