![]() Choose the Topic you would like Al to Address: Question 32. Do I obey my parents if they are not Christians? Yes. In Ephesians 6:1-3 God says "Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right." In other words obey your parents as you would obey the Lord. It does not say obey only Christian parents. It also does not say, "Obey your parents if they are right." It says "obey your parents' (unconditionally) because it is the right thing to do." The only exception to this would be if your parents ask you to do something that was morally or legally wrong. It is God's job to hold your parents accountable, not yours. They will have to answer to him one day for all the decisions they have made. Your parents are much more likely to come to Jesus if they see Jesus in you! (See Question #10). These verses go on to say that you are to honor your parents (Christians or not) whether you feel they have earned it or nor. Treat them with dignity and respect and God will smile on you. EPHESIANS 6:1--3 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. "Honor your father and mother" -- which is the first commandment with a promise -- "that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth." |
